Overview
Chess Workshop is an offline chess learning application for Windows. A procedural 3D set and keyboard-accessible flat board share legal rules and saved positions.
Play and learn
Choose computer play at one of six training levels or play locally with two people. The first two computer levels use a teaching policy; higher levels use Stockfish skill presets. These are training settings, not human ratings. Computer games can be untimed, and the player can choose either color.
Move by clicking a piece and destination, dragging a piece, or entering SAN or UCI notation. Optional legal-move markers show available squares and captures. The 3D board supports camera orbit, zoom, flip, overhead view and camera lock; the flat board offers keyboard navigation.
Coaching and practice
Guided, Coached and Independent assistance profiles offer different levels of help. The local coach can provide progressive hints, ranked move suggestions and explanations grounded in the analyzed position. Learners can work through 32 lessons with 97 exercises, including a complete guided game, then practice with 100 original compositions. Review examines saved games and lets players retry positions or explore a separate variation.
Accessible by design
The flat board supports arrow-key navigation and Enter to select a move. Other options include move entry by notation, text scaling, high contrast, reduced motion and optional sound.
Local-first saves
Games and learning progress save in the browser. The application works without accounts, remote opponents, analytics, remote fonts or runtime downloads. The repository documents source installation and Windows offline packaging.
